Morning Thoughts at the Arboretum

November 10th, 2008

The warm sun pierces the window and strikes the cold of my body from my early morning walk in the Morton Arboretum. There seems the be a group of regulars here at the little tables set up in the atrium. Mostly older people, retirees, finishing their morning exercise. They chatter happily as they sip coffee and talk about craft projects.

There is little color left now. Still some spots of brilliance hold on against the encroaching cold. A week ago it was 70 degrees as a warm snap rolled though and gave false hopes that winter was still a distant thought. Snow flurries danced in the air yesterday and set my girls to talking of blizzards and sledding.

The sky is a slightly hazy but satisfying Fall blue. As I look out I see leaves launching from tree tops like small birds setting to flight. For a moment they look as though they will accomplish flight only to settle slowly to the ground to become part of the cycle that will bring new leaves back to life next year.
